The Peaky Blinders gang pays tribute to one of its own, toasting Cillian Murphy on the global success of Oppenheimer. Murphy, who portrayed Tommy Shelby on Steven Knight’s successful period drama from 2013 to 2022, portrays the titular J Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s epic feature, which has received critical acclaim and grossed over $400 million worldwide in less than two weeks.

The official Peaky Blinders account posted on its social media channels today:

Cillian, from the moment you donned Tommy’s cap it was clear that you are at the top of your craft. Your performance as Oppenheimer is magnificent.

Peaky Blinders executive producer Caryn Mandabach told Deadline today,

He truly deserves all love from people who know him best.

Many people have applauded Murphy’s portrayal of Oppenheimer. In his review for Deadline, Pete Hammond stated that the actor “captures all the contradictions of this brilliant, tortured, complicated man” and called the film “the most important motion picture of 2023, and maybe far beyond.

Universal began international distribution of Oppenheimer on July 19, which defied expectations by grossing $180.4 million worldwide on its launch. It has enjoyed fantastic holds and has surpassed $400M globally as of this past Sunday. Through Tuesday, the international box office total is $255.5 million, with a worldwide total of $443.9 million.

Murphy’s nearly 10-year storyline as Peaky‘s Tommy ended with Season 6 last year, earning him his first BAFTA nomination for the show. Throughout its duration, the drama garnered a rabid global following. Murphy also served as an executive producer on the show.

Before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Murphy stated to Deadline of Peaky,

The show is a kind of global phenomenon and we never expected it… I feel really proud of it and that’s the thing about television, it’s continually growing an audience and people are rewatching it. I mean, it’s kind of staggering how popular the thing is still… I still haven’t figured it out – it’s still kind of bizarre to me, but it’s wonderful. It means that we did something good.
