Alexis Mac Allister: Liverpool gets a greenlight in the chase for Brighton and Argentine midfielder

Liverpool expresses hope of completing the signing of Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister this week.

The two Premier League teams have been engaged in communication concerning the Argentine World Cup champion, whose contract includes a release clause ranging from £45m to £55m.

In October of last year, Mac Allister penned a fresh agreement with Brighton, prolonging his existing contract that was originally set to conclude this summer. The new contract will now be in effect until the summer of 2025, and it also includes the provision for a potential extension of 12 additional months.

Once the release clause conditions are satisfied, it is anticipated that Liverpool and Mac Allister will promptly come to an agreement on personal terms.

The impending arrival of the 24-year-old is expected to kickstart a potentially eventful summer at Anfield, as Jurgen Klopp aims to rejuvenate a squad that fell short of securing Champions League qualification this season.

Liverpool has a specific requirement to strengthen their midfield, as they face the departures of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner due to the expiration of their contracts. Additionally, Arthur Melo, who is on loan, is set to return to Juventus.

The transfer of Milner to Brighton is nearing completion, with his move to the Amex Stadium on the verge of being finalized.

Brighton concluded their Premier League campaign just one position below Liverpool and will participate in European competitions for the first time in the upcoming season.

After joining Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019, Mac Allister returned to his former Argentinian club for the remainder of that season. Subsequently, he embarked on a loan spell at Boca Juniors for the first half of the 2019/20 campaign.

Mac Allister eventually completed his transfer to the Amex Stadium in January 2020, and since then, he has made 112 appearances for Brighton, registering 20 goals and providing nine assists.

During the 2022/23 season, he experienced a significant breakthrough, emerging as a crucial component of Roberto De Zerbi’s remarkable squad and recording an impressive tally of 12 goals across various competitions.

In addition, Mac Allister solidified his position in Argentina’s midfield during the World Cup held in November and December. He showcased his skills by starting in six matches, including the final, as Lionel Scaloni’s team emerged victorious, clinching the tournament title in Qatar.

During an interview with Sky Sports in January, Mac Allister expressed the significance of being versatile and capable of playing multiple positions.

“I always say that I like to be in contact with the ball,” he shared with Sky Sports. “The closer I am to the ball, the better I feel. I like to play as a midfielder. It does not matter if it is a 6, an 8 or a 10. I grew up as a 10. But then I understood that I could play in more positions.”

“I think it is important for the modern player to be able to play in different positions to give the team and the manager different options. If you ask me I would say that today I feel more comfortable as an 8 but I know I can play as a 6 or a 10.”
